Badly worded questions & contentious answers

Week Three. Monday 17 September 2012.

League Two, Saddle Club v Our Lady's A. Questions set by Blundellsands of the Northern Quiz League.

Round One Question 4a - What is the brightest Star in the Northern Hemisphere? Saddle Club's answer - SIRIUS.

Quiz paper answer - ARCTURUS.

Round Seven Question 2b - In which constellation is the Star Sirus, also called the Dog Star, the brightest in the Northern Hemisphere?

No one got the question correct but the point is this... this question completely contradicts the earlier question's answer.

Saddle Club won the quiz by 1 point. But it could have been costly given the two contradictory questions. I know most of us play the quiz for the social side of things, for fun and the like. But imagine losing the quiz because of this sort on injustice! I think we (Wirral League) should highlight issues such as the above, as and when they happen. Maybe other quiz teams could send in their 'dodgy questions' to this forum. Maybe these issues should be highlighted and sent back to the team that wrote the paper. This to be done in the spirit of friendliness and so that the offending paper writer can learn and improve. If I had written a dodgy paper and somebody gave me feedback I would be more than happy to take it onboard and learn from it.Your thoughts please.

Re: Badly worded questions & contentious answers

Just to add to the fun - isn't the sun the brightest star in the northern (and southern) hemisphere?!

Re: Badly worded questions & contentious answers

I agree with JazzyB above.

We should also introduce goal line technology to settle disputes (i.e. Mr Google) now that many of us have access to t'internet on mobiles etc. Obviously, this would need the agreement of both sides and should come with the caveat that not everything on wikipedia is accurate.

I also feel that we could encourage more people to join the league if each player had his/her own theme tune as in darts and was accompanied to the table by a model. This may require a slight increase in subs next year or a less glossy fixture booklet.

Re: Badly worded questions & contentious answers

I agree about using smartphone technology. We tried it out in the friendly last week and it worked fine.

We've all encountered misuse of phones at quiz nights, but the 10 second time limit should put a stop to that sort of thing!

Re: Badly worded questions & contentious answers

I now feel very self-conscious about not being called David or Dave. Even Rodney Trotter would be more at home here. sad
